In the old days in the Basque country, most families had grapevines. They made table wine with it for their daily use. In my family, grapevines are also a tradition. Over the course of time, it has been passed on from father to son, generation after generation.
It was in 1975 that the decision was made to sell our harvest to the Irouleguy wine cellar to make table wine with it.
In 1985, I decided to pull out my vines in order to replant the three grape varieties of AOC Irouleguy red (Tannat, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet sauvignon), on half a hectare of terraces.
Ten years later, it was time to replant the white varieties. One hectare of AOC Irouleguy white grape varieties appeared, the Gros and Petit Manseng.
My father who is now 86 years old, remains fond of the land and still helps me in the vineyard.
At the same time, like a lot of wine growers, I look after dairy cows in order to make cheese, butter, cream and milk. My wife and my daughter, who are very involved in this adventure help me on a daily basis. We go to local markets and we open up our farm Bidartia in Ascarat in order to enable people to discover our farm products.
I have been involved in the Irouleguy wine cellar for more than 15 years now on the administration board of directors and the sales board. As Mr Alexandre Bergouignan, founding member of the wine cellar rightfully said « the future of the wine cellar is intoxicating ».

The wines from the Cellar are the fruit of the work and the values from which the wine growers and the members of the cooperative personally identify themselves.
